-35° in missouri??
Not very often does it get “cold” let alone a blizzard like warning for us in Missouri …. And to record it’s been one of the coldest it’s been in 33+ years here … definitely the coldest I’ve went through.
But farmers & ranchers must go on. Those with livestock bundle up with numerous layers, to check herds - watching for signs of distress, birth, sickness, frozen water lines, and that’s just a few things on the list.
Jason & I survived the -35° windshields. No new baby calves - Praise God!!! - and the things that did HAPPEN. It could of happened at 35 & 53°.
A blown hose on the mixer wagon - over flowing water tanks. Yes. You read that correctly. Our tire tank was OVERFLOWING during the coldest day. But Jason hand dipped it out with a trusty 5 gallon bucket. Until we could replace the frozen float value (I’ll give you the brief. The cows drank the un- thawed water down so much. That the float froze when it couldn’t keep up!)
We’ve had several hydrants freeze at the homestead (his parents) - which was a chore to carry buckets 🪣 from the shop. But manageable. I worked on my guns 😉 I guess -
We were lucky. We are blessed. We survived. We didn’t lose any livestock. We didn’t have new born babies freezing. And we spent some much needed quality time playing farm simulator with the kids. Reminding us just - how blessed we truly are.
