Farmer Friday | Rain Delay ☔️🌱

Three words no hay farmer really wants to hear this time of year. “There’s Rain Coming” forecasted after you had a 3 day window that turns into 10 days of rain; ranging between 20% chance to full on storm threats.

Now don’t get me wrong—we’ve been blessed with rain this spring. The alfalfa is growing, the ponds are filling back up, the pastures are green, and everything around us is alive because of it. Rain is a key ingredient in everything we do.

But if I’m being honest, I’d sure appreciate about ten straight days of hot sunshine, a little wind, and weather made for hay.

That’s farming, though.

You can plan.
You can prepare.
You can watch every forecast app known to man.

But at the end of the day, you’re still relying on something much bigger than yourself.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” — Proverbs 3:5-6

Farming has a way of teaching that lesson over and over again.

Sometimes it’s the weather.

Sometimes it’s cattle.

Sometimes it’s raising kids.

Sometimes it’s life itself.

The last year has reminded us that not everything turns out the way we pray it will. We prayed for healing. We prayed for more time. We prayed for answers. And in true spirit, we got all those – but not necessarily in the exact way we prayed for. I’ve had to re-learn how to trust God even when the forecast changes.

Just like a rain delay in hay season, there are seasons in life when everything feels paused.

The plans get pushed back.
The timeline changes.
The road gets muddy.

Yet somehow God keeps showing up.

In the wind that catches your face when you’re feeling overwhelmed.

In the sunrise that breaks through after a stormy night.

In the little burst of sunshine that sneaks through dark clouds when you’re discouraged.

In a child laughing.

In cattle waiting at the gate.

In a faithful dog walking beside you.

In the ordinary moments that remind you He’s still here.

Life doesn’t always go according to our plans.

But maybe faith was never about having perfect weather.

Maybe it’s about trusting the One who controls it.

So for now, we’ll keep waiting on sunshine, keep watching the radar, keep raising cattle, keep loving our families, and keep walking this dirt road one day at a time.

The hay will get made.

And God is still good.

Even in the rain delay. 🤍
